The solo is arranged so it's really in-your-face guitar. Because I am gonna get this done, eventually. But I needed to be ready to lay down and do this thing. In England, at that time, American records were about four years behind. I think in the end we all took Herbies advice, and it ended up being great advice. My sister started playing guitar at that time, and I didn't want to be in competition with her, so I decided there must be something else I would like. I was writing for the people who might want to listen to it. But he puts the drum track together one drum at a time, so it can sometimes be very abstract. His solos are always very musical and he always has something new to say. AD: I workout for about an hour before I play, going through a lot of rudiments and practicing coordination between my hands and feet. RM: Do you have a set of pads in your dressing room? And I went on a hike, one I had done many times before this incredible trail, its pretty intense. We were ready to go and rehearse and do the first video, and I was on a ten-day break before we started rehearsals. David Frieberg, our bass and key- board player, had been going to Nautilus for about a year, so I decided to go along and try it and see what it was like. Its extremely gratifying to have people come up and say Open Arms was my prom song, and to this day, my husband and I still listen to it. Or when guysll come up and say, Yknow, I wasnt into youse guys, but if I took a chick to your concert you know what Im sayin? I get the whole spectrum. Have you considered doing any teaching? But there was only so much I could get. The only thing is, it doesn't look like a drum kit. It was really intense. Sopranos is a definite yes. AD: Yeah. No. I really, honestlyand you must print thisI really dont want to respond to what theyre doing, because what theyre doing is none of my business. Theyre all magical to me. I told him what my deal was and he agreed to it. but you were never a critics band. Together they were an all-star group. But the greatest thing was, I really felt in my heart that Neal was happy to see me. AD: It's the difference that's required by the song. I did not use steroids! I first met Zappa near the end of Retaliation, at a big rock and blues festival in Brussels. I like to do studio work for people who want me-where they respect what I'm doing and why. I saw this English rock and roll program where they had three drummers sitting together doing a drum trio, and I got knocked out by what they were doing. I don't feel I'm perspiring my energy away, like I used to. Then he started hitting the drugs, because I think he got bored, and he started becoming a space case. I wanted to play. So you can't rehash what you did before if somebody else is playing something new. As I said in the beginning with you, theres something reverent about that, to me. RM: You've done quite a bit of recording. And I felt that we still had wings, yknow? It felt like it was toast, and I felt like we should just stop. After the tour, they got back in touch and asked me about being in the band, because Eric had unfortunately passed on. RM: Do you structure your solos any particular way? Blues and progressive stuff was where I was at, yknow? The label said, We think you need a frontman. Everybody at the airport, man, walkin by, givin me the thumbs-up, like, Yo! Like I said, using it can cause the problem. I was the new kid. Only certain people understand the technique parts. AD: I was into everything. I feel lost when Im not doing it. So why bother having it? Doing a record isnt like the rigors of touring, but its a demand on your time. And our bass player Richard Michaels got killed in a Fourth of July holiday accident on the freeway. And theres been some that I wasnt too pleased about, but my feet had been held to the fire, slightly, so I had to. If you play the bass and snare at the same time, you 'llfind that the snare drum sound disappears. Only one night did I have to have a shot of B12 with an anti-inflammatory. It has nothing to do with you as a drummer. So Don Ellis called me and said Herbie wanted me to fly out and meet Neal. I was a Journeyman. And the songs I gotta tell you, it was unbelievable. I told him l never sign contracts that are one-sided. That, to me, is completely amazing. And we had differences of opinion in some areas, which eventually wore us down a bit. I know I'm going to do an album sometime. "It's just me and [drummer] Aynsley Dunbar, pretty much, with this big, wide-open space for phrasing on the guitar. Definitely. Dont crack the stone is what he kept on saying. A lot of people go in there and try to blast their way through everything, and then they don't want to come back because they've pushed themselves too hard. Well, what Im about to sayIm gonna come across as a prima donna, but if theres any singers out there reading this at this point, theyll understand completely. I'd most likely end up breaking the pickups if I played them, because I don't like to play lightly. She would be on one side of the stage with the orchestra, and I would be on the other, so there was a gap between us. asked me if I'd like to join his band, with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood. AD: Joe Morello, Bellson, Roach, Elvin Jones, everybody who was playing modern jazz. At the end of the last video from my solo album, for Foolish Heart, theres an extra tag-on section that I shot for the video, to just tell everybody that that particular phase of my career was now over and now Im back to Journey. So it was a completely different area for me. The more you play, the less they hear. If you crack itits got so much integrity. We can all play crush rolls around the drum kit, and play every note possible in a drum fill, but it will just sound like mush to the average person. And by the end of that tour, I was toast. I could go out and I could have eight, nine, ten vodkas, and then I wouldnt drink for another three or four days. It was like getting over some kind of love affair, you know. Theres like 20 different prosthetics, all claiming to be the one that lasts, and I had to do research on that crap. Completely. Some of that stuff never goes away. But if you're backing up a soloist, the fill you played on the record might not get behind what he's doing on stage at that particular moment, because he's doing something different. Schon was like fifteen years old when he joined Santana. Nobody knew, yknow? Now, I'm using two 20" bass drums, 10", 12" and 14" power toms on top of the kit, 16" and 18" floor toms, and an 8 x 14 wood-shell snare drum, which is really a good,.sounding drum. But we were also working together. And after we compiled enough material to go in and cut our first record Infinity, we all listened to it and went, Wow, theres something here. And the label was freakin out, they were lovin it. The substitute would not know the charts, would not be able to solo or ad-lib or anything else. And then he left the band for good. Jimi would come down and sit in with Retaliation and we would have a ball. So[long pause] when we did the VH1 thing, I said there was quite some time where I never really felt part of the band. I was reluctant to try to write some more, but now Ive been doing that, and its been a real experience. At first, I was scared about really doing it, because I thought, "What would it be like to be muscle-bound and go on stage? 'This is how it is and this is the God's truth and believe me, this is the way you should do it." Aynsley Thomas Dunbar : British drummer, band leader. I just told somebody that, a couple weeks ago, a writer that Im working withmy own voice is sometimes difficult to hear. Was that a hard pill to swallow at first? I said, . Most of the drum parts on that were written down. What I thought I had to be? Im layin down, too. And that sidewalks not exactly clean. I was also looking after Jeff as far as that was concerned. He 'will sort of jump out and start putting ideas down which I often jump on. Well, disagreements are part of life! After all those years of doing everything, it didnt change my original drive, my need to get some music out there or do something creative. But dont call it Journey, yknow? That only lasted for six months, because Mayall wanted me to stop playing as much as I was, and become more of a blues drummer. But I didnt. And some funk. Well, Steve came out with us and started hangin outhe was hangin with me, actually, and we were roomin together, and I pulled out an acoustic guitar, and one of the first songs we wrote, in about a half an hour, was Patiently. And that just kinda came out of nowhere. Youre just responding to a question I asked. It depended where you caught me. I look at people like Jeff Beck who are in their 60s and still kicking ass, with more fire than they had when they were kids. We were just playing dance music, but because I had been practicing for a few years, I was able to play along with all of the people who were my heroes. Was that frustrating for you, that he sort of pulled out like that? If you're playing nice and relaxed in front of 20,000 people, they're not going to pick up any energy from that. At certain times, I've had a drum lose its tone because it has been dropped and the shell has cracked, or something has gone wrong and it's deader than the other drums and I've had to replace It. And us being on this mission together, to be the greatest, and write the greatest songs, and come up with great sounds, and fight for the greatest performances. And Ive played some of the stuff for friends, and for some people that arent afraid to tell me the truth. That's how I look at rock and roll drums, or drumming as a whole, actually. Cause I thought it was silly. Well, I thinklooking back, I was sort of a workaholic. Cause we wanna get out there. No, I didnt. Theyd play amazing chord changes, and wed all try to navigate and try to help us be great with each other, and when we were done, Jon and I would take just, empty tracks, with the melodies in my head, to his house, and I would sit there at the coffee table and sing the melodies, and we would skull out lyrics. Afterbeing with them for 3 years, I'm still having a good time. You even had your own video game. Did you enjoy working with another drummer? Same for the bass. Then I had trouble with Bowie 's management. People trying to sell hot dogs with your music. AD: I am. And George Tickner in the beginning, who was the guitar player in the band before he left, and in came myself and Jon Cain. And not until it really took off, I think, did that question really get answered. And I just dont think theyre for selling dogs and burgers. When you see a Journey song turn up on a movie soundtrack, or on TV? So he sat in on two songs and then he came back and sat in my car and started chatting about session work in Los Angeles and how much money could be made and how I could make a good living out of it. Im _not _whining. 1967 - 1970 (3 years) The Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation was a late-60s British blues-rock band led by drummer Aynsley Dunbar after his stints in John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers and the Jeff Beck Group. He goes to a restaurant, he goes through the little jukebox at the table, they go through the thing, he goes through Heart, and then he ends up with Tony Bennett, and he reaches in, puts a quarter in and pushes a button, and you think hes gonna play Tony Bennetthes a wiseguy, hes either gonna play some rock and roll or Tony Bennett, that was how they threw the scent off. After you've been around a while, you understand that you can't play everything you've ever wanted to play. I was using alcohol for many, many years, to numb myself. I use it to find out how I'm playing-where I rush or where I slow down. I went along with it. But then we started playing again and I couldn't believe it! It sounds like me, theyve said. They'd get a gig somewhere else paying a couple of pounds more, so they would send a substitute to play with me. All creative processes are a love-hate thing. I didnt want to leave the group, for Christs sake! And fall back into my life. And so at that point, I knew I had some chemistry writing with him, even though it was very different from anything Id done before. Career. **You were one of the few people in America to know how The Sopranos ended, before it aired. I drank a lot. And then the second song we wrote, I was downstairs in Gregg Rolies house, where I was living, in Mill Valley, and Perry was over, and we were sittin down in the beanbags in the music room, and he started singin me these melodies that he had, for Lights. And I just started putting the stumble to it, felt like it was gonna be a stumble, and tried to give it some Hendrix-y type chords, to make it sound cool, and then I added a bridge to that, for a guitar solo, and that one was done, in about ten minutes. And, then after that, I continued looking for doctors, maybe hoping Id hear what I wanted to hear. What happened was wed put out our first record, Journey, and I think we sold a little over 100,000 records. #9. AD: I used to do a lot of push-ups, sit- ups, and all that to keep myself feeling healthy, but I was still getting drained. I was going to the fair in my home town. I imagine it was a really good way to run away from things, for a while. For about six months, I worked with just a snare drum. Is it that way in England? Lets roll. Otherwise, the band would never know where the hell I was. So I went to Toronto and looked at the charts, and then went to London to work on Lou Reed's Berlin album. AD: The guys in the Starship know how to lock in and play as a band. I would suggest that anybody who feels tired and worn out on stage, check out the nearest Nautilus center and go into a program. And so everybody packed their stuff, went home, and Im hearing that were gonna be off for maybe a couple months, three months, six months, whateverbut it turned out to be close to eight to ten years. May 8th, 1998, was the total release from all our contracts, and from Sony. Even while I was doing the solo album, even after it was successfulin my heart of hearts, I was never gonna leave Journey. And theyre good. Do you think that dynamic was set up from the beginning? You made a couple of solo records after that. Then I listened to Billy Cobham on the Spectrum album, and I like what he was doing. Thats right. And sell some records. At home, I've got a drum kit, but the trouble with a drum kit at home is that it's so damn loud, it blows your hearing. lt made it really hard to keep up with the jazz. I had been through a lot of divorces, and probably a lot of em due to this problem, and I had to just really face everything on a straight level. So fine-I couldn't have asked for a better opportunity. No rehearsal-just get on the stage and play. AD: Tone quality , more than anything else. Pete is a good guy to jam with because he's a good bass player and he is capable of hearing things and moving right into them from what he was doing. I completely understand how they felt and why, and I want to make sure thats clear. You made one more record together. I'd like to know what pedal he used. To the average person, they just don t like drum solos. Well, there was no proving to us that he could sing. AD: I went out with Flo and Eddie and played around the world with them. It sounded good. It sounds progressive, and Neals singin on it, he obviously doesnt sing like you. But that was his open door, to go do it, and that was sort of the beginning of the demise. But I lwould always come off stage at the end of a set feeling totally and utterly exhausted, and; I was always getting sick on the road because I would be so run down from; pushing myself to the limit all of;the;;' time. I said Okay, you do what you gotta do, and Ill do what I gotta do. And I hung up the phone, and when the dial tone came back, I called my attorney, and I said Start the divorce. And he said, What divorce? And I said, The divorce. And I told him what happened. I mean, back roads, where theres no cars, where theres nothing but coyotes. And the only one that was consistent was, When the pain gets great enough, youll replace the hip. And I said, Excuse me? It was kind of weird, because as soon as we started cranking up, the orchestra sort of disappeared. I called Jonathan. And he played the tape for em, and they werent sure. You were feeling like you were going to burn it out. There are other people playing with you and there's a courtesy involved - you can't be trekking on each other's toes. Weve always had a difference of opinion in that area. Yeah, the Oh Sherrie record. And then the day after, I was at the airport, and youd think we had a hit single again. When they were uncertain. I thought it was silly to license songs for commercials and stuff. RM: What type of music was being played in Liverpool? I can understand how they feel. And that stars on the sidewalk. I guess I was just in denial about it, like, You gotta be kidding me. [Journey had] just reworked our partnership. Well, yeah. AD: Oh yeah. Would you ever be interested in doing regular studio work, such as commercials? I guess its because maybe Id found a life. But he was nice enough to call me, so I thought I'd go on down and listen to him. Lets go have some pizza. [laughs] Please. I dont know. How do you draw the line between playing freely enough for yourself and at the same time, being consistent enough that the rest of the band knows what you're doing? Which made me, inevitably, want to put it back together, without Steve. It sort of gives a rush in the feel, without actually rushing. And they are like paintings, cause they were painted in a different time and they sound like it, and that gives em their quality. They couldn't see any further than where they were at.
